Cole Ndelu by Mark Antonello

About The Artist

When asked to describe herself, Cole often responds with, “I’m a visual communicator.” This describes Cole Ndelu perfectly. The awarded photographer uses visuals as a medium to tell stories. Cole honed her craft at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography.

Her work has been exhibited locally and internationally and she has been featured in international photography publications like Photography UK and New Internationalist. Cole describes her work as “fashion, documentary” She uses form and colour to showcase black bodies in a way that celebrates without fetishizing. She has recently found a place in the photographic landscape in South Africa. In February 2018, she was invited to join the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives Class.

She creates from an unapologetically black and unapologetically feminine place. Cole believes in making the imagery that she wanted to see growing up, the way that she wants to make it. Her work contributes to the archive of work that challenges the idea of Africa and what it means to be African that has been popularized by mainstream media.
